A contemporary art gallery on the River Tyne that chose Caslon — a 1734 typeface — as its entire design language, and it was perfect.

Why It Works

EB Garamond at weight 400 only creates a typographically pure, unhurried reading experience. Dusty cornflower-blue surface (#D1DBEA) against white is the most sophisticated surface color in this collection. Hyperlink blue accent in an old-style serif context reads as considered digital historicism. Uniform 30px radius gives the old-style typography an unexpectedly contemporary shape system.

Best For

Art gallery and cultural institution pages. Editorial and literary publications. Book publishing and literary brand pages. Heritage brand digital experiences. Premium arts journalism and criticism.

Skip This If

You need a bold or high-contrast visual identity. Your product is tech or startup-coded. You need multiple font weights for clear information hierarchy — Garamond at one weight compresses the scale.

Palette

Gazette starts with white.

One blue to break the silence.

White background with dusty cornflower-blue surface (#D1DBEA) is a surface color choice that communicates without being decorative. It is not the sharp blue of tech products, not the warm gray of editorial products. It is a specific dusty blue — institutional, slightly faded, as if the card had been on a gallery wall for a while and absorbed the ambient light.

The hyperlink blue accent (#0000EE) is used in this old-style serif context as a form of digital historicism — the internet's first color in the internet's first typeface. Intentional.

1734 typeface. Thirty-pixel radius.

The oldest serif with the softest corners.

Gazette's EB Garamond and uniform 30px border-radius create a productive temporal collision — historical typography in a contemporary shape system. Neither dominates. The tension between them is where the design lives.

Typography

Instrument Serif at 400.

Paired with Instrument Serif.

EB Garamond at a single weight (400) throughout is the most typographically committed choice in Batch 2. No bold headings. No weight variation. The hierarchy comes entirely from size. At 1.0 heading line-height, the headings stack tight — the old-style letterforms at this density create the visual weight of a book spine.

Body at 1.4 line-height with 15px paragraph spacing creates comfortable reading conditions for long content. The uniform serif texture — same family, same weight, different size — makes the page feel like it was composed by a typographer rather than assembled from a component library.

Dusty blue. Old serif. Flat depth.

The art gallery made legible.

Gazette's dusty cornflower surface containers provide quiet spatial hierarchy at tablet width without any shadow overhead. The all-400-weight Garamond reads cleanly across wide content columns.

Design tokens that give your product a point of view. Not just colors and fonts. Personality.

Shape

Pill radius. 1px borders.

Gazette's physical language.

Thirty pixels on everything. Cards, buttons, inputs — all at 30px radius. The uniform pill-like softness is the contemporary counterpart to the historical typeface. Garamond says the 18th century. The 30px radius says now. The combination of the two is Gazette's entire argument.

One weight. One family. Full clarity.

Garamond at phone width.

Gazette's single-weight EB Garamond compresses to mobile without hierarchy loss — the size differences between heading and body are sufficient at any viewport. The pill radius holds at every element size.

Atmosphere

Smooth and comfortable.

Gazette's invisible layer.

Flat depth — no shadows anywhere on standard elements. The dusty blue surface containers create spatial separation without shadow overhead. Subtle surface noise on the surface containers gives them a slightly material, not-quite-digital quality. Custom fast easing curves (cubic-bezier(0.22, 1, 0.36, 1)) on enters create a spring quality — elements arrive with a small overshoot, then settle.
