Downpour

Developer ORM with clean simple aesthetic

lightdeveloperclean

Born From

Muted gray text (#434A54) as the color of documentation that knows it is being read, not admired. The 4px radius as the corner of a code block, precise and repeatable. IBM Plex Mono as the typeface that lives equally in prose and queries, the bridge type for technical writers. The gradient that fades leftward like a comment line disappearing into the margin.

Why It Works

IBM Plex Mono as code font pairs perfectly with Inter body for technical documentation. Compact density with 4px radius creates sharp utilitarian developer containers. Muted gray text (#434A54) on white creates comfortable reading for long documentation sessions. Narrow 960px container keeps code examples and prose at optimal reading width. Darken hover effect keeps interactions subtle and non-distracting in documentation.

Best For

ORM and database query builder documentation sites. Developer SDK reference portals with code snippets. Open-source library landing pages with getting-started guides. API schema documentation with endpoint tables.

Skip This If

Your brand needs visual excitement. The muted gray palette with no shadows creates an intentionally plain aesthetic. You need marketing energy. The compact documentation-first layout reads as reference not landing page. Your product targets designers. The developer-optimized monospace and muted colors lack visual personality.

Palette

Downpour starts with white.

One accent to break the silence.

Pure white background. The surface (#F8F8F8) is barely a shade off-white. The distinction is minimal by design. Downpour doesn't use dramatic surface changes to create hierarchy. It uses borders, text weight, and spacing. The near-black accent (#1A1D20) is functionally black. Every button, every link, every call to action is a dark stamp on white paper.

The text color (#434A54) is a medium cool gray. Not pure black. That softened text reduces eye strain during long documentation sessions. The muted text (#6B7280) is standard Tailwind gray-500. Familiar to any developer who's worked with Tailwind. The border color (#AFB9C5) is a cool blue-gray that adds the faintest hint of color to an otherwise monochrome system.

Documentation that respects your time.

No extra pixels. No extra noise.

Downpour's tight radius and compact base type create the focused reference environment where developers get in, get the answer, and get back to work.

Geist at 500.

Paired with Geist.

Inter at weight 500 for headings. Medium weight. Not bold enough to feel like marketing. Not light enough to disappear. The perfect weight for technical documentation. At 14px base size with a 1.333 type scale, the system is compact. Dense without being cramped. The normal letter-spacing lets headings breathe naturally.

Body text at regular weight (400) with 1.6 line height is generous for such a compact system. That extra vertical space between lines is crucial at 14px. Small text needs more leading to remain comfortable. The system prioritizes long-form reading (documentation, API references, code explanations) and the line height proves it.

Docs that read like docs.

Exactly right. Nothing more.

Downpour's generous body leading at compact size creates the long-form reading comfort that API documentation actually requires, because nobody skims a migration guide.

The design system you build once and use forever

Marcus WebbApril 2, 2026

Most teams build three or four design systems before they get one that lasts. Not because the work was bad — because the context kept changing. What if the system was built to absorb change instead of resist it?

Token-first architecture gives you exactly that. The primitives stay stable while the semantics do all the work of staying current with your product.

“The best system is the one your team actually uses.”

That means ergonomics matter as much as coverage. A system nobody reaches for is a system that doesn't exist.

Shape

Crisp radius. 1px borders.

Downpour's physical language.

4-pixel radius. Small. Sharp. Barely there. This is the shape language of code editors and terminal UIs. Every container is essentially rectangular with the barest softening at the corners. The 2-pixel small radius makes buttons almost square. The darken hover effect adds no spatial movement. Just a color shift. Click something and it darkens. Pure function. Zero decoration.

Atmosphere

Smooth and compact.

Downpour's invisible layer.

No shadows. No depth. No glow. Elements are defined by borders and surface color. The line-style dividers separate sections cleanly. The smoothness of the motion speed keeps interactions from feeling cheap or instantaneous. There's a measured quality to every state change. The gradient (a horizontal fade from the surface color) is the only atmospheric element. It creates a subtle horizon line that gives pages a sense of direction without adding complexity.
