Slate-gray background reads as studied seriousness rather than developer dark mode. Terracotta accent on dark gray is historically grounded and visually warm. Source Serif 4 throughout creates a unified booklike texture. 2px radius everywhere signals editorial restraint — nothing is trying too hard.

Slate gray (#40474F) as the background is the seed's defining palette choice. It is not dark mode. It is not black. It is the color of a stone wall in diffused northern light — the specific gray of serious institutional spaces. Terracotta accent (#CC4C28) against that gray carries the warmth of fired clay.
White text on slate reads differently than white text on black. The contrast is softer, the experience more material. Muted text in cool silver-gray (#C2CCCE) provides a secondary tier that never fights the primary.

Alcove's dark gray and terracotta derive directly from Rijksmuseum's Dutch decorative arts heritage — the digital environment echoes the physical one, and the result is a dark mode that feels like a room rather than a setting.

Source Serif 4 used for both headings and body is a study in typographic restraint. The same font at two weights (700 heading, 400 body) creates hierarchy through weight alone — no font-switching, no display faces, no decorative variation. The consistency is the message.
The heading line-height at 1.26 and body at 1.38 both sit in the comfortable readability range for extended reading. This is a system designed for content you want people to spend time with — not a landing page typeface, a reading-mode typeface.

Alcove's physical language.
Two pixels everywhere. Alcove refuses decorative radius. The near-flat 2px corner is the minimum softening that prevents absolute rigidity — it is a technical choice, not a stylistic one. No card is more rounded than a ruled line. The containers sit flat and firm, like pages in a case.

Alcove's terracotta accent on slate reads with full warmth at mobile scale. The two-weight system and 2px radius compress cleanly — the typographic texture remains rich without becoming heavy.
